Becoming a Counselor

If you're at least 16 years old and think you'd enjoy working with kids in a Christian community, we've got a great leadership opportunity for you! Come to Counselor Training, a nine-day program designed to give you the skills you need to be a Camp Huston Counselor. You'll work hard, you'll learn a lot, and you'll have a great time!

Counselor Training is an intensive, interactive experience. You'll get the chance to practice and role-play skills with experienced Camp Huston staff. Workshop topics include group facilitation, conflict resolution, effective listening, planning and leading games, and low-impact camping skills. At the end of Counselor Training, you may be selected to work as a Counselor based on your performance and availability.

Counselor Training is open to individuals who enjoy working with children, feel comfortable in the outdoors, and believe they can be a positive Christian role model. Candidates must be at least 16 years old and have completed the 10th grade.

Resident Staff

If you're at least 17 years old, have solid leadership and communication skills and are available the whole summer, consider applying for Resident Staff. Resident Staff provide an extra measure of leadership to the camping program. You'll spend time planning all-camp events and helping new Counselors learn their roles.

Resident Counselors work as cabin counselors, lead group activities and assist during Counselor Training. Resident Counselors must be at least 17 years old.

Discovery Group Leaders head up a group of two cabins and Counselors, and provide leadership and direction to the Camp Huston program. DGLs must be at least 19 years old.

All Resident Staff plan and participate in fun and creative activities, serve as general resources and role models to the camp community, and have significant interaction with both campers and other staff. In addition, you'll spend a fun summer with a creative and talented staff group!

Adventure Program Staff

Are you interested in helping kids learn new adventure skills while spending the summer backpacking, rock climbing and white water rafting? If you're at least 21 years old, look into our Adventure Program. We need responsible leaders who enjoy a challenge and can share their enthusiasm with campers.

Adventure Program staff work hard with the Huston Center Director to plan sessions full of teamwork, trust and adventure. We emphasize community-building and encourage campers to reflect on their outdoor experiences. You'll work with professional guides to create a rewarding, memorable experience for your campers.
